Facebook Recalibrates Check-in Counts

b61b9 facebook mini Facebook Recalibrates Check in CountsSocial network Facebook indicated that some significant changes are coming related to how it counts check-ins, providing "a more accurate picture of how people are visiting your business."

Check-ins were previously counted in aggregate under the "were here" total. That, of course, caused multiple checkins and some check-in inflation (abuse) that these changes should correct – if not eliminate entirely.

According to the email notification sent to page owners, Facebook will only count one check-in every 12 hours from the same user.

While your business may look less popular as a result of the change, many socially focused businesses should be in favor of the change as it could provide a way for a third-party (or Facebook) to build out some strong check-in reward systems.

No indication was given about when the new statistics would be available, but with the new Timeline feature officially here it should be arriving within days.
